The Šariš Gallery in Prešov was founded in 1956, and is one of the oldest regional galleries in Slovakia. Its collection fund belongs among the best and most representative ones in Slovakia. It is the most important regional collecting, scientific research, cultural and educational gallery institution, maintaining the status of regional gallery of the Prešov self-governing region. It is a methodological centre for other galleries and founding authorities in the region. At present, it manages more than 4000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, graphics and applied art items from the end of the 15th century to the present with regard to the region of Eastern Slovakia. It is also an important documentary and information centre for the region’s fine arts scene. For its visitors, the gallery offers various temporary and permanent exhibitions, prepares and realizes lectures, discussions, studio visits, workshops for children, open-air art lessons, concerts, literary series, club activities, and consultancy in the field of fine arts (authorship, restoration, reference study in the archives).
